The man Dikko

Nigeria football federation 2nd vice president, who also doubles as chairman of the League management company LMC, Mallam Shehu Dikko is a year older today. Ordinarily you will expect this day to come and go like any other but because of who he is and what he is to many, we have decided to celebrate a man that deserves a thousand accolades.

Who is Shehu Dikko?

Zaria born Shehu Dikko was born into the family of Late Alhaji Baba Adamu Bako Dikko, one of the Northern elites and the first indigenous pharmacist in Northern Nigeria. Nicknamed (Bakin Bature), “the Black English Man,” for his elequence in English Language and his expertise in medical field. The senior Dikko was a strict disciplinarian, a very focused personality and a devout Muslim.
He was one of the nation’s builders, who sought knowledge and Allah’s guidance for the service of this country, especially in the North. Like his father, mallam Shehu Dikko stands out as one of Nigeria’s finest football administrators.  From a file carrying dedicated servant of the NPL, this Kaduna state born administrator has risen so fast in less than two decades to become the most admired, most adored  most respected and most talked about football administrator in Nigeria and Africa
Dikko, who holds an MBA with specialization in Marketing and Finance and a Certificate on Football Direction Program from IOD London, is currently the Chairman of the NFF First Instance Body (FIB) in charge of Club licensing in Nigeria; an inaugural Director LMC (Premier League) before moving up the ladder to become chairman of the LMC in 2015. He is also a member of the NFF Appeals Committee – the highest judicial body of the NFF in Nigeria and Member NFF Strategic Development Committee in charge of proposing reforms and strategies for the development of Nigerian Football.

What distinguishes Dikko?

He has a wisdom that sets him way above his contemporaries. He is the brainbox of the present NFF under the leadership of Amaju Melvin Pinnick and he has been the brain behind their many successes especially in the area of marketing and sponsorship.
As chairman of the LMC, he signed an improved television broadcast partnership deal with multichoice Nigeria that catapulted the NPFL to one if the best five leagues on the continent. He brought many innovations aimed at improving the standard of the league and created platforms for the media and other stakeholders to leverage on the many business openings in the NPFL

The criticisms

Enemies of Shehu Dikko are always quick to say they are fighting him not because he is Shehu Dikko but because he is a shield, protecting the real enemy. They have identified him as the only reason why they cannot hit target and have decided to rope him into the many allegations that is today threatening the foundation of Nigeria football. Twice, Dikko made a futile attempt at becoming NFF president but on both occassions, he lost under acrimonious circumstances but being a gentleman  he never at anytime contested the results of these elections before the NFF appeals committee or in a civil court of law. He is law abiding  God fearing and above all, peace loving and easy going. The critics, many of whom have benefited from his benevolence are still not satisfied as some will say he is pompous, repulsive, not easily accessible and unyielding. For those who know him from close quarters, they understand that he is just an introvert who prefers to watch from afar and allow his actions speak for him.

The BRAINBOX

Dikko eats and drinks football. He is very passionate and can go at any lenght, to give a good player his chance to shine. From Usman Mohammed to Ezekiel Bassey and lately Samuel Chukwueze, Dikko has at one time or the other interceded, by putting a call across to National team coaches to give these young players their chance to prove a point. He knows a good player whenever he sees one and he is ready to invest his last cash in developing talents as long as they will be useful for Nigeria in the long run.

His baby ( THE NPFL)

Ever since his emergence as chairman of the league management company, the body saddled with the responsiblity of running the Nigeria league, Dikko has jealously carried his baby like an egg and has done everything humanly possible to keep the league going. His biggest setback came in 2018 as the multi million dollars worth FOX Sports deal, that was about to position the Nigeria league among the elite leagues on the continent hit a brickwall due to the unending crisis that is rocking Nigeria football. Despite this setback, Dikko is not relenting as he has promised to continue fighting until his dream becomes a reality.

The allegations and accusations

Like their predecessors, five chieftains in the present NFF executive committee, led by the president, Amaju Pinnnick, his first and second vice presidents Barrister Seyi Akinwunmi and Shehu Dikko and two others are currently facing charges of corruption. Majority of these charges comes with manufactured evidences spiced with cooked allegations prepared by some disgruntled elements to frustrate the vision and the mission of this young enterprising entrepreneur who has given the better part of his knowledge and life into building the delapidating structures in Nigeria football.

His strongpoint

Despite all the tribulations and condemnations, he has remained steadfast, focused and resolute and has continued to forge ahead in his determination to create a lasting legacy for the NPFL and to make Nigeria a true giant of Africa and world  football.
